For some people who are working on their recovery, the only way forward is to completely cut ties with their past. No longer will you have any relationship with your old drinking buddies or those who are always getting high. Moving to a new area, whether it be a different city, county, or state, is one alternative that may be available. It is imperative that you include in your preparations the process of locating a new group of friends who are clean and sober

Create a plan that includes both short-term and long-term objectives. Where do you see yourself in a half year, a year, or even five or ten years from now? What kinds of information, expertise, training and degrees are required of you? Create a strategy for how you intend to reach those goals, and make it a daily habit to work toward achieving them. If you do this, you will meet new people with whom you will have the opportunity to perhaps build new friendships. Don’t put constraints on yourself.

At this stage in your recovery, you are free to choose any path you choose to take moving forward. Your future is something that you make for yourself, therefore, take responsibility for it. It is not something that can be done on your behalf by someone else. And you should never, ever let the negative energy or influence of another person define your life in any way. 

Maintain a Positive Outlook

Be hopeful about your future. Learn as much as you can every day, and try to improve yourself as much as you can. Make an effort to connect with people and serve them. Getting out of your own head and into the world around you is a terrific antidote for the blues or sadness that may creep into your thoughts from time to time. This is especially true if you no longer have many close friends with whom you can spend quality time. Don’t be concerned. There are going to be more. You should pack your life with activities that have importance to you, work toward achieving your goals, and maintain an open mind. 

Being generous in spirit is about more than just doing the right thing. It gives the giver considerably more in return than the work that is required to carry it out. When you put aside your own troubles and concerns and do what you can to assist another person, you will find that you are refilled in more ways than you could possibly think. This type of energy is known as positive spiritual energy. Giving makes it possible for you to receive. This uncomplicated idea is one of the deepest, and adhering to it can have a profoundly good impact on your life as you work on recovery

  • Take it one day at a time.
  • Be positive.
  • Be hopeful.
  • Have a plan.
  • Help others and keep at it.

In a short amount of time, not only will you no longer hear anyone bringing up the past, but you also won’t give it a second thought yourself. After all, today, as well as each and every one of your tomorrows, belong to you to live.
